If
you take a look opposite you will see the front cover for 'A
Taste of Les Goolies'. Now, take another good look... yep, its a
worrying cover indeed. For their next release they might want to
break out the pencils and leave their photo on the inside. But, as the saying goes, appearances can be deceptive.
Les Goolies may look like some kind
of evil Slade tribute band from Oz but they certainly don't sound
like 'em. Due to
the unusual and funny subject matter of their songs, such as 'Darling
Dagmar' (a song about a 1960's midget female wrestler), they could probably be best described as a comedy rock
band a la Spinal Tap.
The first song on 'A Taste of Les Goolies', the up-tempo 'Chicken Nuggets' turns out to be the standout track with
its dirty fuzzed up backing geetar and deep vocals (which are
impressive throughout). The more rockin' songs are fun and
enjoyable, however, the slower songs do tend to out-stay their welcome. Even though
the tunes are toe tappin' numbers they last just that little too
long. Not enough is going on musically or lyrically to justify their length
and if the songs were shortened they would
be much improved.
A few tweaks are required then for their next release but overall 'A Taste Of Les Goolies'
is
quite entertaining.
