The Steals - Floodlights EP |
 |
According
to the inside sleeve The Steals consist of only two main
members, Jayn Hanna on vocals and John Hogg on guitar and to be
honest you can hear why when listening to the EP. The Steals really
are all about the vocals of J. Hanna and the guitar of J. Hogg.
J. Hanna has a very distinctive soulful voice which can at times
exude a haunting quality. The breathy, airy vocals on some of the
songs will make you feel as if you've been transported to the
Yorkshire moors on a fog-filled frosty autumnal morning. The
various guitar parts, from fingerpickin' to slide, by J. Hogg are
understated but they complement the vocals well and both combine to
produce some memorable music.
Most of the the tracks are gentle numbers apart from "Out of your hands"
and "Give it all back" which are a bit rockier and are
probably the strongest songs on the EP. Of the 6 songs there is really only
one weak tune, the instrumental "Song to the Sea" which
doesn't really go anywhere and is really more like an outro. Apart from
that the rest of the tracks are good but the real standouts for me were
"Give it all back" with its rumbling bluesy bass-line
(slightly reminiscent of Zep) and
"Sinner", my personal favourite, with its excellent lyrics
and melody.
Overall, the Floodlights EP is a really good taster and is worth
picking up but I have to admit to
not being entirely satisfied. Personally, I'd like to hear a little
bit more variety, a few more songs in the vein of the rockier "Out
of your hands" but hopefully they're saving those for the LP.
