I
only heard this for the first time recently and it blew me away.
Back in 1988 there really were only two rap acts of any merit in my
mind, Public Enemy and De La Soul. I tuned out of Run DMC right
about the moment Steve Tyler rammed his mike stand through their
Styrofoam wall and screamed ‘Walk This Way’… presumably to a
bank or other financial institution. But had I known about this
record no doubt things would have been different. The rhymes are
solid, the beats murderous and the samples as tasty as they come,
mostly in the same vein as Public Enemy but with a playfulness that
they never had. I must have been sleep walking or something to have
missed this. One of the collective Kool Keith went on to forge a
very worthwhile solo career and it’s on this record that he
delivers the line ‘Change my pitch up, Smack my bitch up’ which
was later sampled by someone on a novelty record a while back.
Basically if you like great rap and don’t have this then get it
immediately, for your own sake if not for mine.
