Jack
and Meg White broke through to the mainstream with this delightful
collection of blues/rock/pop/nursery rhyme/punk/blah/blah/blah type
songs after several records which were slightly better because they
had sounded like Jimmy Page jamming with the Yardbirds. Only louder.
Check out the excellent De Stijl for evidence of this. White Blood
Cells is a departure but it’s a fragmented one that won’t have
you reaching for it in your car or back bedroom too often. Jack
White’s vocals tend to grate after about six tracks because even
though he seems to be forcefully singing about stuff he really cares
about you’re never really quite sure what it is and interest
naturally wanes. That said there are a few storming tunes on White
Blood Cells, also known as The Singles, and some credibility may be
derived by humming these to yourself on a bus full of students of a
morning.
